I'm very excited to begin the 2011-2012 school year. In the summer, the halls are quieter, and we miss seeing all of the students on a daily basis. We are eager for the students to see and experience the changes that have occurred over the last two months. There is fresh paint in some of the hallways and new paint colors in the cafeteria. Our custodial staff has done a great job making everything sparkle. Mr. Dushko's class has continued the work started last spring and created an amazing garden nestled just outside the library and music rooms. We are so lucky to work and learn in such a vibrant environment. Thank you to each and every person that contributes to that environment. Your work helps to make S-E a truly special place.

This year, the students are going to notice some changes in procedures and policies, as well. Our character education program has merged with our discipline and behavior program to create clear expectations for all students. We will be expecting all students to follow three rules throughout the building, playgrounds, and on busses.

Be safe.

Be respectful.

Be responsible.

Throughout the year, we will discuss the meanings and examples of each of these expectations and practice how to display them. Students will continue to have chances to earn "Shining Character" coupons by displaying these qualities. It is our hope that these important character traits become second nature to our students, as they are important not only in an educational setting, but throughout one's life.

We will kick off a great school year with our "People as Reading Partners" or PARP program. This will begin on September 30th and run through October 21st. Parents are encouraged to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes per day during this period (and beyond!). This year's theme is "Wild about Reading." A special guest will join us to kick off the event on September 30th. I don't want to give away too much about this assembly, but some of the students have met him before and loved his presentation. He brings some wild friendsssssssssss.
